Why did this article catch your attention?
This article caught my attention because Wilko are in the planning process for cutting more than 400 jobs.
Where and when will the more than 400 Wilko jobs be axed?
The more than 400 Wilko jobs will be cut in many locations, including:
- Head Office (dozens)
- Worksop, Nottinghamshire (approx. 245, including Assistant Store Managers)
- And more.
By the looks of it, there have not been any dates set for these job losses.
How would this affect the more than 400 Wilko employees?
The more than 400 Wilko employees would be affected massively. Moreso when it comes to finances, as they would go from being in paid employment to claiming Universal Credit (unemployment benefits).
Working in Customer Service and Retail, employees are generally on their feet during their shifts, so they would be affected physically.
There is also a high chance of being affected mentally.
Who else would this affect?
It's not just the more than 400 Wilko employees affected by this. Here's a list of others who would also be affected:
- Customers - With fewer employees and potentially fewer stores, customers will have to go further afield for their shopping at Wilko. Also with Head Office being affected as well, a tool take customers longer to get through to Head Office.
- Towns and Cities - Wilko stores that are affected by this, will probably not have as many customers visiting their stores. This would mean that there would be less money for the economy in the selected towns and cities.
- Families - The more than 400 Wilko employees may need to borrow money from their respective families, which will need to be paid back as soon as possible.
- The Government - The Government would not receive any taxes from any of the more than 400 Wilko employees. The Government would also have to pay out money in Universal Credit payments.
I am one for the 400 affected Wilko employees. What can I do to seek alternative employment elsewhere?
It looks like the coronavirus (Covid-19) has eased enough where more companies are recruiting new members of staff.
If you would like to continue working in Customer Service and Retail, the most common place to find jobs in this industry would be on Job Boards. However there are several companies who would require you to apply on their respective websites.
I personally find it a lot easier and more productive to visit retailers on foot, as I find I get a lot more responses this way. But please be careful not to catch Covid-19.
