The position is for a full-time Research Assistant (RA) in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University and Bradley Hospital, working with Anastacia Kudinova's research team: https://sites.brown.edu/youthselflab/. This research position coordinates several multi-method studies of bio-behavioral mechanisms involved in proximal suicide risk in youth. This position provides full-time research assistance with (i) participant recruitment and scheduling, (ii) conducting clinical interviews and sleep, circadian timing, and neuroimaging (fMRI) assessments, (iii) data management, including regular safety checks of the phone app responses, and (iv) lab management assistance. These projects are part of the Adolescent Mental Health Collaborative that aims to improve youth's mental health through coordinated research, treatment, and training: https://sites.brown.edu/AMHC.
This position is well-suited for an aspiring clinical psychology graduate student interested in child and adolescent mental health, as it will provide first-hand experience: 1) conducting research with families who have been through a recent mental health crisis, 2) using ecological momentary assessment technology and clinical interviews to assess teens' current mood and suicidality, 3) assessing sleep and circadian timing in youth,4) using neuroimaging self-referential tasks, 4) data management, preprocessing, and analysis, 5) managing undergraduate students in the lab. The position includes direct mentorship from Dr. Kudinova, an early career researcher and licensed clinical psychologist, and opportunities to pursue one's research interests via poster presentations and co-authorship on publications. AMHC opportunities for career development include the Research Assistant Development Series and Mentorship Program, where RAs are offered one-on-one support from a postdoc mentor.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Review medical charts and referrals and coordinate with clinicians to identify and recruit participants. Make recruitment phone calls and administer phone screen interviews to potential participants.
2. Conduct clinical research assessments with child, adolescent, and adult participants
including data collection from questionnaires, brief clinical assessments/interviews, remote Dim Light Melatonin Onset (DLMO) tests, and neuroimaging (fMRI) scans.
3. Set up phone app surveys for participating families and conduct regular safety checks of participants' answers.
4. Maintain IRB protocols and support communication with Lifespan IRB.
5. Assist in acquiring, managing, processing, and analyzing data from the above research assessments.
6. Keep a flexible schedule to accommodate the schedules of research participants and research facilities, including afternoons and occasional evenings/weekend availability.
7. Work alongside and oversee undergraduate research interns.
8. Perform other lab management duties as assigned.
9. Observe all hospital policies, rules, and regulations.
10. EDUCATIONAL/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Minimum bachelor's degree in psychology, neuroscience, sociology, or another related field.
2. A minimum of one year of experience in a research project or a related clinical setting is required (can be unpaid experience or a senior thesis).
3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to develop rapport with participating families, interact skillfully with clinical populations, and work well with the team.
4. Outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize among multiple tasks.
5. Ability to work as part of a team and individually and be self-paced in tasks.
6. Experience with data capture systems (e.g., REDCap) or statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R) is strongly preferred.
7. Eagerness to learn and be open and responsive to constructive feedback.
8. Working knowledge of research methodology (e.g., ecological momentary assessment; neuroimaging) is preferred but not required.
