Job Description

PATH is a global nonprofit dedicated to achieving health equity. With more than 40 years of experience forging multisector partnerships, and with expertise in science, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales up innovative solutions to the world's most pressing health challenges.

PATH's Primary Health Care program is comprised of six teams: Health Systems, Early Childhood Development, HIV/TB/Viral hepatitis, Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition, Noncommunicable Diseases, and Sexual and Reproductive Health. Our Maternal, Newborn, Child Health and Nutrition (MNCHN) team is a global leader in advocating for and in implementing approaches along the continuum of care and integration of health systems to optimize impact.

Specifically, the MNCHN newborn nutrition team has pioneered advances in optimizing care for small and sick newborns, with focus on the linkage between nutrition and newborn care. Although human milk is the recommended feeding option for these vulnerable newborns (pre-term, low birthweight, sick or small), they – and their mothers - face unique challenges due to physiologic and systems level barriers often preventing human milk consumption. To address this, the newborn nutrition team has established the Mother-Baby Friendly Initiative Plus, a comprehensive approach for ensuring equitable access to lifesaving human milk for small and sick newborns, including specialized lactation support and locally appropriate human milk banks for safe provision of donor human milk when needed. PATH works with Ministries of Health and global/regional policy and technical leaders to design and implement sustainable systems as part of a global movement to improve the quality of care for this target population. Advancing these efforts across key geographies is a current PATH priority.

PATH is currently recruiting a Kenya-based Maternal Newborn Child Health (MNCH) Technical Lead to provide strategic direction and to lead technical and advocacy work in integrating a nutrition package of care into models of care for the small and sick newborn. This MNCH Technical Lead will guide implementation and manage critical relationships with stakeholders, leading business development activities with the goal of expanding these efforts across the Africa region. Engagement with Ministries of Health and relevant departments or government structures is critical in the success of this role.

This MNCH Technical Lead will report directly to the MNCHN team lead and will have a "dotted line" of reporting to the East Africa Regional Hub and Kenya Country Director to ensure effective integration into PATH's regional presence in Kenya and throughout the East Africa region and beyond; close collaboration with the Africa Division leadership is expected.

The MNCH Technical Lead has the following primary responsibilities:

  • Ensure high quality implementation of projects:
    • Serve as technical point of contact for all Africa related newborn nutrition engagements
    • Support the creation, adaptation, and piloting of newborn nutrition implementation materials, including training materials
    • Provide technical and tactical newborn nutrition expertise to the MNCHN team to inform project planning, implementation and evaluation, and strategic expansion
    • Assist in guiding gender integration within RMNCH activities
    • Lead or contribute to all project deliverables
  • Generate new strategic opportunities and revenue across key African geographies:
  • Foster innovative ideas and opportunities through co-creation with MNCHN and country programs
  • Support development of regional Africa newborn nutrition strategy
  • Work with MNCHN and Africa leadership to develop strategic partnerships to advance innovation and access to newborn nutrition
  • Identify donor priorities and cultivate relationships that lead to new opportunities
  • Lead or contribute to proposal development for expansion of newborn nutrition programming in Africa Division
  • Coordinate stakeholder engagement, regional learning sessions, and policy advancement

Required Experience

  • Master's degree or higher in public health, public policy, or related technical/clinical field
  • 10+ years of working in maternal and newborn health
  • Clinical experience in newborn care, with specific experience in neonatal intensive care
  • Strong technical expertise in newborn or nutrition/lactation; experience in both preferred
  • Previous experience in developing technical training materials
  • Experience collaborating with or embedded within technical and policy experts, ie, Ministry of Health, Pediatric Associations, and relevant government structures
  • Skilled in proposal writing and concept development
  • Strong clinical research skills preferred
  • Fluent in English; additional languages a plus
  • Available to travel nationally and internationally estimated at 20 percent per PATH's travel and safety guidelines
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Kenya
