Qualifications

IRC Nigeria Program

  • The IRC has been present in Nigeria since 2012 when the organization responded to flooding in Kogi state. In February 2014, the IRC moved into Adamawa State in Northeast Nigeria to provide humanitarian interventions through a multi-sectoral, integrated approach for conflict affected populations.
  • IRC Nigeria now operates a country office in Abuja and field offices in Mubi and Yola of Adamawa State, Maiduguri and Monguno of Borno state and Damatru of Yobe State.
  • The IRC is responding at scale to the humanitarian situation across sectors including Education, Child Protection, Health, Nutrition, Women Protection and Empowerment, Environmental Health, Economic Recovery and Development, Protection and Rule of Law, and Governance. Primary Responsibilities

  • Ensure innovations and education solutions identified have global relevance and opportunities for replication and scale
  • Support further understanding of localized student and teacher needs for education, preferably in humanitarian contexts
  • Build and maintain a network of innovation process and education solution partners who can support the development of new educational products and services.
  • Work with local innovators in Nigeria, the Airbel team and other key internal & external stakeholders
  • Manage delivery across several projects with multi-disciplinary teams that include education, technology, design, innovation, implementation and research expertise.
  • Oversee program budget and ensure targets are being met within the team.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement activities
  • Clear and reporting (monthly, quarterly and annually) against program level deliverables and KPIs.
  • Support business development through scoping proposals prior to inception.

Qualifications

  • Five years of experience delivering projects and programs ideally in NGO or social enterprise settings.

  • Oversee the implementation of  OTL education activities in Borno State
  • Ensure that the identification, set up and management of and non-formal learning opportunities, adhering to relevant policies and standards, and mitigating risks to harm.
  • Oversee teachers professional development activities in order to improve instructional practices in literacy, numeracy and social and emotional skills.
  • Develop actionable work plans to ensure the timely implementation of project activities, in collaboration with project team members
  • Monitor progress towards the objectives and intended outputs of projects using routine data, spot checks, observation, and other methodologies.
  • Contribute to the development of robust data collection systems to ensure that the OTL is data-driven and that programmatic decisions are grounded in evidence.
  • Keep abreast of the changing operational environment, including organization of assessments and identification of changing beneficiary needs.
  • Provide regular written and verbal reports on education activities to supervisor
  • Review Budget vs. Actual expenditures on a monthly basis, providing relevant feedback to the finance department and adjusting activities as required.

  • Under OTL, IRC and its consortium partners will work with students, teachers, community-based organizations, local government education authorities (LGEA) and state education authorities, and the private sector to design, implement, and scale lasting results which foster a healthier, better educated population by improving learning outcomes for Borno and Yobe's most vulnerable children and youth.

Responsibilities

The SEL specialist under the supervision of the school and safety protection lead will:

  • Lead the integration of SEL into access to quality education, TPD, and education actors' capacity building activities.
  • Identify gaps in social, emotional, and behavioral atmosphere of the school and classroom, and develops plans of action around priorities.
  • Work in partnership with various stakeholders, including students, parents, community organizations and mental health providers to update and adapt SEL "kernels of practice" for publication, training, and dissemination.
  • Stay on best practices in social and emotional learning, learning differences,
  • Consult with principals and staff concerning social emotional learning needs of students.
  • Provide guidance on designing social emotional learning integration into the school.
  • Provide professional development to support the social emotional learning curriculum and instruction by using best practices, including research on learning theory and content standards.
  • Support the integration of school wide social and emotional learning education throughout school.
  • Provide social and emotional learning education workshops for parents and community.
  • Provide technical support and modeling of social and emotional learning lessons to whole classes and small groups in accordance with the curriculum.
  • Present professional development for school staff on social and emotional learning for students and on district SEL program goals and report requirements.
  • Provide SEL professional development and trainings for schoolteacher and facilitators.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or Education; Master's preferred.
  • Five years of experience in education.
  • Experience working on social, emotional, and behavioral support programs.
  • Training in trauma-informed practices and/or restorative practices and experience teaching a social emotional curriculum to students.
  • Classroom teaching or school-based management experience highly preferred.

Under OTL, IRC and its consortium partners will work with students, teachers, community-based organizations, local government education authorities (LGEA) and state education authorities, and the private sector to design, implement, and scale lasting results which foster a healthier, better educated population by improving learning outcomes for Borno and Yobe's most vulnerable children and youth.
  • The Gender Specialist will ensure that project activities effectively integrate gender considerations and mainstream vulnerable groups, such as women and persons with disabilities.
  • The specialist will support the design and implementation of project activities that address the unique human rights challenges that women face, and how to incorporate gender and social inclusion concerns in advocacy activities.
  • S/he will support project management with recommendations for improving processes to achieve objectives, will contribute to the overall adaptive programming approach, and will play a key role in project work planning, learning and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

The Gender specialist under the supervision of the school and safety protection lead, will:

  • Lead the integration of gender responsive and as appropriate, transformative approaches into access to quality education, TPD, and education actors' capacity building activities.
  • Provide dedicated training to state and local education actors, CBOs, CSOs, CBMCs, school administrators, and LFs/teachers to build foundational knowledge on education gender equity issues and strategies.
  • Review project documents, training materials for gender inclusion.
  • Provide guidance throughout the project on gender issues across all program areas;
  • Conduct gender analysis at program outset and incorporate findings in work plan for ongoing monitoring and learning purposes;
  • Develop and deliver training to program staff and relevant stakeholders on gender-related issues, tools and approaches, and conduct awareness raising initiatives;
  • Deliver technical assistance to stakeholders to build capacity around development of inclusive practices and policies;
  • Work closely with field and SSCP, including the COP to develop and implement appropriate messaging plans;
  • Develop and keep up to date the activity's Gender Strategy and activity-specific guidelines on incorporation of GESI principles into detailed activity plans;
  • With technical oversight, provide technical leadership in design, development, planning, implementation, and capacity building of specific technical components of programs.
  • Maintain a constructive dialogue and technical exchange with technical staff of implementing partners.
  • Develop tools for the design and implementation of specific technical components.
  • Monitor, assess, and report on the implementation of the Gender Strategy, to ensure compliance in all programming, planning, training, and activities
  • Work with the team in the development, application, and monitoring of gender-sensitive indicators and the consistent use of sex disaggregation in reporting to better measure gender-related impacts and outcomes.
  • Review and assess effectiveness of gender mainstreaming in the activity's policies and in activities through reports, field visits, and surveys; Lead the development and implementation of evidence-based equity and social inclusion analysis and the accompanying action plan.
  • Integrate gender content into communication materials (posters, scripts for radio or television, documentaries, and success stories), and integrate gender-related highlights and "success stories" for Quarterly and Annual Technical progress reports for donor submission.
  • Represent the project at relevant conferences, and stakeholder and donor meetings as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Gender, Education, International Development, or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in gender equity and GBV program management, coordination, policy, advocacy, technical assistance, and transformative approaches, preferably with USAID
  • Relevant experience in supervising community based social development and gender equality mainstreaming.
